DULUTH

Three people were hospitalized, including a 69-year-old woman with serious injuries, after a St. Louis County sheriff's deputy responding to a house fire rear-ended another vehicle on Woodland Avenue, according to the Duluth Police Department.

The crash occurred about 12:15 p.m. near the intersection of Woodland and St. Paul avenues. Police said the deputy was traveling north on Woodland Avenue with emergency lights and siren activated while responding to a house fire in St. Louis County's jurisdiction.

The deputy's vehicle struck the rear of another northbound vehicle approaching the intersection.

The 69-year-old woman driving the second vehicle was transported to a local hospital with serious injuries. Two passengers, women ages 57 and 78, also were hospitalized with injuries of unknown severity. A third passenger was in the vehicle, but police did not provide information about that person's condition.

Police did not report whether the deputy was injured. The crash remains under investigation by the Duluth Police Department. Authorities said no additional information was immediately available.

BUHL

A 20-year-old Hibbing man was hospitalized with a gunshot wound to the head Friday night following an incident at a boat landing south of Buhl, according to the St. Louis County Sheriff's Office.

Deputies were notified about 10:30 p.m. Friday, Oct. 30, that the man had arrived at the emergency department of Fairview Range Medical Center in Hibbing with a single gunshot wound to the head.

Investigators determined the man had been attending a bonfire with several other people at the Scott Lake boat landing. Friends reported hearing a popping sound near the man's vehicle before discovering him lying on the ground nearby.

The man's friends transported him to the hospital. He was later airlifted to a Duluth-area hospital with injuries believed to be serious.

Authorities said foul play is not suspected. The incident remains under investigation by the St. Louis County Sheriff's Office.
