Andrew Askew joins Essentia Health on Feb. 4 as vice president of public policy.
Askew will be responsible for Essentia’s government relations and public policy strategy for North Dakota, Minnesota and Wisconsin. He also will bring Essentia’s voice to national health care policy conversations.
Askew worked for several years alongside the late Mike Mahoney, who held this position previously. Askew served as a lobbyist and member of our public policy team focused on North Dakota issues while working as an attorney at Pearce Durick in Bismarck, N.D.
“In his new role, Andy will expand upon that work as he forges trusting relationships on a broader scale,” said Essentia CEO David C. Herman, MD. “I appreciate Andy’s passion and enthusiasm for public policy work and the opportunity to support Essentia’s mission.”
His office will be located in St. Paul.
Askew received his law degree from the University of North Dakota School of Law in Grand Forks, N.D. He also received a bachelor’s degree in English from the University of North Dakota and a bachelor’s degree in business management from St. Cloud State University.
Askew joins Pat Mullen on Essentia’s public policy team, who also serves as vice president of public policy with a focus on Essentia’s city and county relationships as part of the Vision Northland project.

Essentia Health to offer free advance care planning class in Superior
What if a sudden illness or injury leaves you unable to speak for yourself? Who would speak for you? What would you want them to know about your values and wishes?
A free advance care planning class hosted by the Essentia Health St. Mary’s-Superior Clinic on Monday, Feb. 3, will highlight the steps necessary to ensure you’re prepared for this kind of scenario. In addition to fostering thought-provoking discussion, the class will help you learn the vocabulary, reflect on your values, explore goals for treatment and work toward completing a health care directive.
The class begins at 4:30 p.m. on Feb. 3 at the Essentia Health St. Mary’s-Superior Clinic, 3500 Tower Ave. For more information, contact Wanda Paulsen at (218) 786-1310.
