Superior Street reconstruction walking tours start Tuesday in Downtown Duluth

Superior Street reconstruction. The Duluth Experience

By Pakou Ly
The City of Duluth is partnering with the team at The Duluth Experience to help “dig” a little deeper into the history behind the buildings and under our feet in downtown Duluth. The downtown district is rich with known and hidden historic facts, some of which has been unearthed during the phase 1 reconstruction of Superior Street between 7th Ave West to 3rd Ave West.

“We are embracing our reconstruction inconvenience with some ‘constructive’ fun,” said Duluth Mayor Emily Larson. “These guided walking tours will give residents a chance to learn about our downtown history while seeing the progress of the Superior Street project up close. Thanks to the Duluth Experience and Zenith City Press for partnering with us to develop this customized, creative and unique opportunity. Register early, because we think these will fill up fast.”

The walking tour is offered at no cost to help educate and showcase the significant historic contributions to our downtown economy and recreational spaces. It’s appropriate for all ages and abilities. The tour will be led by the experienced and talented team from The Duluth Experience and will last about one hour. The tours will take groups from the Duluth Library along Superior Street and into the skywalk system.

“We are really excited about the Superior Street Reconstruction Project Walking Tour because it provides a rich historical context for the amazing transformation we’re witnessing in Downtown Duluth,” said Dave Grandmaison, CEO of The Duluth Experience. “We love downtown and this tour is a natural extension of our other great downtown experiences.”

Tours are being scheduled twice per month during the Noon hour and at 4:30 pm during June, July and August with the first tours starting on Tuesday followed by tours on June 27, July 10, July 24, August 7, and August 14.

The tours will change locations in the next two years and be curated to highlight the areas within the upcoming two phases of Superior Street reconstruction. The construction project details are available at http://www.superiorstreet.org
