Jessica Buelow will serve as Student Speaker for the University of Wisconsin-Superior’s commencement. The event will take place on Saturday, May 19, at 2 p.m. at Siinto S. Wessman Arena on the UW-Superior campus.

Buelow is a Bachelor of Arts degree candidate with Magna Cum Laude honors. She is a Biology major with minors in Chemistry and Spanish.

Growing up in the north-central Minnesota community of Ada, Buelow spent much time at her family-owned fishing resort. In high school, she earned 61 college credits under the Post Secondary Education Option, which will allow Buelow to graduate with a total of 177 credits.

Buelow came to UW-Superior and quickly became an active member on campus. Since 2014 she has served as a Campus Ambassador assisting with campus tours, representing the university at campus events and assisting in the Admissions Office. Beginning in 2015, Buelow became a First Year Experience Peer Leader leading groups of students during the Weekend of Welcome freshman orientation.

She has been a member of Students of Science – serving since 2015 as co-President – and helped to grow the annual Science Fest, which now traditionally attracts between 1,000-2,000 people each year. Buelow has also been an active member with Alternative Spring Break and Campus Volunteer Group, which involves an annual spring break trip with Habitat for Humanity.

Academically, she is a member of the Academic Dean’s Student Advisory Council representing the Natural Sciences Department. An avid beekeeper, Buelow has been a Biology Lab Assistant and Lab Manager since 2015, while also performing research with the honey bees on campus.

After receiving her degree, Buelow will be moving to Minneapolis to pursue a career in biology and aiding in volunteer and community service efforts. She plans on continuing her education in the field of biology with the hopes to become a professor at a small, liberal arts university like UW-Superior.
