The Bulldogs advanced to the 2018 National Collegiate Hockey Conference Frozen Faceoff in impressive fashion over the weekend, sweeping Western Michigan in a best-of-three series 5-0 Friday and 2-0 Saturday.
Third-seeded UMD, ranked No. 8 nationally, will face No. 2 Denver on Friday at 7:38 p.m. at Xcel Energy Center in St. Paul.
Sophomore goaltender Hunter Shepard played lights-out against Western Michigan, while collecting his school-record eighth shutout of the season and fourth against the Wildcats since last November.
Louis Roehl and Jared Thomas (empty-net) scored for the Bulldogs Saturday night.
“Obviously, they were going to come at us hard tonight — their season was on the line,” said UMD senior right wing Karson Kuhlman after the series-clinching win. “Overall, I think we were happy with the way we played and finished off this series.”
