The University of Minnesota Duluth will host its 2018 women’s volleyball home opener against Bemidji State University on Sept. 6 at Amsoil Arena to begin the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference slate. It marks the first-ever appearance for the Bulldogs at Amsoil with the announcement less than a month before UMD’s start of the fall practice season, which begins Aug. 8.

“We are extremely excited to play our opening home match at AMSOIL Arena, the home of Bulldog Hockey,” said Bulldogs coach Jim Boos. “We love playing on our home court at Romano Gym but this will be a great and unique experience for the players and fans and we look forward to the match-up with Bemidji State at AMSOIL Arena.”

“This will be a very special night for our team and our community,” said UMD Senior Associate Athletic Director and Senior Women’s Administrator Karen Stromme. “Amsoil will be a tremendous venue to highlight the skills of our nationally renowned program.”

This will be the first time UMD has played a home matchup away from Romano Gymnasium. Romano Gym, the home to Bulldog volleyball since 1977, is currently undergoing renovations of Phase Two of the Romano 2020 Project expected to be completed in early September.

“We look forward to showcasing our nationally competitive Bulldog Volleyball program in the exceptional facility that AMSOIL Arena is,” said UMD Athletic Director Josh Berlo. “A sincere thank you to the DECC, the Duluth Indoor Sports Center and all those who came together to make special event a reality.”

“Adding UMD Volleyball to AMSOIL Arena for this special season opener is fitting,” said Duluth Entertainment Convention Center Executive Director Chelly Townsend. “We think this accomplished team and fans will feel right at home surrounded by their Bulldog colors. I look forward to seeing a sport court built over the ice.”

Tickets to the game, which starts at 6 p.m., are $12 (tickets are included for season ticket holders) and free to UMD students. Parking at the arena is $5. A student fan bus will run from the Kirby Student Center bus hub.

In addition, UMD will honor military organizations with Military Appreciation Night with a special giveaway to be determined later. All military members with ID will be admitted for free.
