Weather event forces DTA to alter bus routes, renders parts of Canal Park inaccessible

The Duluth Transit Authority (DTA) has temporarily switched to mainline-only bus service effective immediately due to today’s winter weather event.

The limited service will be frequent, but only run along Grand Avenue in West Duluth and East Superior Street in East Duluth. This temporary service will be run until such time conditions improve and buses can safely return to regular route.

Regular-route bus service was suspended at 10 a.m. today due to snow and ice build-up on city streets. In particular, the hillside avenues which buses regularly use to travel to the hospitals, Miller Hill Mall, Duluth Heights, Piedmont, Lake Superior College, University of Minnesota Duluth and Woodland neighborhoods.

The public is encouraged to visit duluthtransit.com for ongoing updates. The DTA’s Facebook and Twitter pages will also have updates.

Meanwhile, the City of Duluth is advising the public that areas in Canal Park may not be accessible due to windy conditions and high waves causing water to flood some areas. The Marine Iron Parking lot located closest to the canal, some segments of Canal Park Drive and Harbor Drive currently have standing water. The city has put up barricades where the areas are not passable and recommends the public stay out of those areas for their own safety.
