Section 7AA boys hockey championship tonight

Duluth East and Andover will play for the Class 2A, Section 7 high school boys hockey championship at 7 p.m. today at Amsoil Arena.

The third-ranked Greyhounds (22-2-3) are seeking their 23rd state tournament appearance, and first since 2015.

Duluth East, which defeated Duluth Marshall 9-1 in a semifinal Monday night, clobbered Andover 9-3 on Dec. 9 at Essentia Duluth Heritage Center. Don’t expect a blowout tonight.

The Huskies (22-5) defeated Elk River 6-5 in overtime in the 7AA semifinal nightcap Monday at Amsoil.

The Greyhounds feature two Mr. Hockey Award finalists, center Garrett Worth (team-high 42 goals and 64 points) and defenseman Luke LaMaster (36 points), both seniors.

Depth is one of Duluth East’s primary assets. Worth’s linemates, senior Ian Mageau (52 points) and junior Ryder Donovan (57 points) are elite two-way players.

Junior power forward Ricky Lyle scored three goals, and sophomore forward Logan Anderson had a goal and three assists in the Greyhounds’ semifinal win.

Will Fisher, Hunter Frederick Paine and Carson Cochran are also elite defensemen.

Senior goaltender Parker Kleive is 15-1-2 and boasts a 1.41 goals-against average and .914 saves percentage.
