State-ranked Duluth East and Hermantown posted early-season boys hockey victories Saturday afternoon.

The Class 2A/No. 4-ranked Greyhounds improved to 2-0 with a 3-2 victory at Wayzata, with senior forward Brendan Baker banging in the winning goal with 2:19 remaining in the third period at Plymouth Ice Center in Plymouth, Minn.

Charlie Erickson and Ryder Donovan also scored goals for the Greyhounds, who outshot the Trojans 30-21.

Duluth East will play host to Bemidji on Thursday at beautiful Essentia Duluth Heritage Center.

Meanwhile, Class 1A/No. 1 Hermantown defeated Lakeville South 1-0 at the Hawks Dome in Hermantown. Hawks sophomore Joey Pierce, a rising Division I prospect, scored his first varsity goal and senior goalie Cole Manahan was perfect with 21 saves.

The Hawks (1-1) next face Eden Prairie on Friday and Benilde-St. Margaret’s Saturday in the North/South Classic at Essentia Health Sports Center in Brainerd, Minn.
