UW-Superior Theatre to hold production of ‘Children of the Holocaust’

SUPERIOR, Wis. – The University of Wisconsin-Superior Theatre will present “Children of the Holocaust” in the Manion Theatre on the UW-Superior campus. Performances will take place on Feb. 23 and 24 at 7:30 p.m. and Feb. 25 at 2 p.m.

This original script, which traces the events of the Holocaust as seen through the eyes of children, was written by Kathy Laakso, who also serves as director of the performance.

“I chose to write about the children because there are many survivors who are getting older or have died,” said Laakso. “Many, as adults, later came out with their stories, which had to have been painful to do, and many have spent the rest of their lives working to preserve the memory of the Holocaust.”

The performance, which features a cast of eight UW-Superior student actors and one community member, includes facts about the Holocaust based on research, oral histories and documentation, but told through theatre to assist in forging a human connection.

“It is about children and how the Holocaust affected them,” said Laakso. “I chose themes from my research – how children were saved by being hidden, how their lives were changed, the horrors they saw and experienced. Given that teachers of elementary through high schools are working with the university to bring their students to the performances, the play is written for a young audience as well as adults.”

Tickets for “Children of the Holocaust” are $12 for adults; $10 for seniors and non-UW-Superior students; and $2 for UW-Superior students; $5 group rate for 10 or more; and $5 for youth 18 and under.
