2024 annual rose tipping events scheduled for Saturday, October 26

By Kelli Latuska

The City of Duluth and Lake Superior Rose Society invite the public to join the annual Tipping of the Roses event at the Rose Garden in Leif Erikson Park. The community event will be held on Saturday, October 26 from 9:00 am until noon.

Whether you are experienced at the task or just want to learn, expert rose tippers will be on hand to teach volunteers the Minnesota Tip Method, a process that protects tender roses from the harsh conditions of a typical Duluth winter.

Rose Tipping is an all ages, no experience needed event. Groups, families, and individuals are invited to participate. If you are interested in participating, please arrive on the specified dates at the Rose Garden, located at 15 S 13th Avenue E. Parking is available on-street as well as in the parking lot located just east of the Rose Garden. Dress for the weather. All tools and supplies will be provided, including work gloves. Time and dates are subject to change due to weather conditions.

Donations of bagged leaves will be accepted for a limited time only. Community members are invited to drop off clean and tied garbage bags of leaves at the Rose Garden. A designated section of the parking lot will be blocked off for the donations. Due to new matting being used to winterize the roses, there is a limited need for bagged leaves. As soon as enough bags have been collected, the City will close the drop-off site. The clean and tied garbage bags must only contain raked leaves and should not contain other plant or yard waste material.

Howie: Minnesota has outgrown its stories

Minnesota does not need more outrage. It needs clearer accounting. It needs fewer slogans and more follow-through. It needs to revisit old assumptions with open eyes and accept that a reputation earned decades ago does not guarantee results today.

Howie: Something is breaking inside Minnesota’s justice system

Something significant is being examined, something consequential has gone wrong inside the process, and the people most familiar with that process decided they could not continue as if nothing had changed. In federal law enforcement, that is as close to an alarm bell as it gets.
