City of Duluth press release

City of Duluth staff are monitoring weather forecasts provided by NWS Duluth today.

The National Weather Service in Duluth is forecasting a winter weather system for northeast Minnesota that will bring snow accumulations from 2 to 8 inches this evening into Thursday.

Per the current forecast, travel impacts will begin sometime after 5 p.m., at which time the snowfall rate may reach .5” to 1” snowfall per hour. This fast-paced, intense snowfall will likely last into the early morning hours and may continue to impact travel even after snowfall concludes, into the early afternoon hours Thursday. Please plan your travel accordingly.

As always, the City of Duluth encourages you to follow the National Weather Service in Duluth for details on the forecast.

Thank you to City of Duluth Street Maintenance crews who will be out day and night plowing, sanding, and salting to keep our roads safe for buses, police, fire, ambulance, and other vehicles. Street Maintenance staffing will be at minimal levels at 6 pm for their regular rest period, with a few crews on to maintain Priority 1 roadways and to clear routes for emergency services vehicles. The combined fleet of 35-plus plow trucks and motor graders will be out in full force at 2:00 AM, clearing snow and ice from City of Duluth roadways.

For more information on our snow and ice policy, please visit https://duluthmn.gov/snow/.

A reminder that property owners and residents are required by ordinance shovel snow from the sidewalks abutting their properties 24 hours after a snow event so that residents who rely on pedestrian travel can do so safely.

Alternate side parkers should be parked on the odd side of the street this week. If you have not yet moved to the odd side of the street, Parking Services will be ramping up their enforcement of alternate side parking and will issue tickets accordingly. Your compliance with alternate side parking rules is crucial to Street Maintenance crews’ ability to plow those roadways curb to curb.

In the most recent snowfall, Duluth Police Department issued over 300 parking tickets, most of which were for alternate side parking violations. Wrong-side parking prohibits the plows from approaching some of the City’s narrower street infrastructure. Noncompliance with alternate side parking rules can mean your road does not get plowed in a timely manner. Failure to move a vehicle after ticketing may result in towing.

The City thanks residents for their cooperation as crews work to maintain roads during this snow event. Updated information will be made available as conditions dictate. Please stay safe while traveling.
