Duluth Area Chamber of Commerce Notebook

"It is also clear from the volume of messages I have received from our members that they too had hoped this work would be done in Duluth by one, or more, of our talented firms." -- Matt Baumgartner, president of the Duluth Area Chamber of Commerce

Matt Baumgartner, president of the Duluth Area Chamber of Commerce, on the tourism marketing contract being considered by the Duluth City Council:

"It is important to first recognize that the decision regarding Duluth’s destination marketing partner is not yet finalized and rests with the City Council in the coming days. We will closely monitor the outcome of the Council's deliberations. It is also important to recognize the time spent and effort of Tourism Working Group and the subsequent RFP Selection Committee, both of which were comprised of respected, high-integrity community leaders.

That said, as an advocate for our local business community, I had sincerely hoped—and indeed anticipated—that this important work would be entrusted to one of the exceptionally talented marketing firms based here in Duluth. Beyond their expertise, these firms bring an intimate understanding of our city’s unique identity and an ability to tell our story authentically. It is also clear from the volume of messages I have received from our members that they too had hoped this work would be done in Duluth by one, or more, of our talented firms.

Yet, the outcome may be destined for a different path. Importantly, whatever the ultimate outcome of this decision is, we at the Chamber are committed to working with the chosen agency to support the critical tourism industry in our region. If this decision serves as a bridge back to a more traditional DMO, it is our hope that local talent is utilized throughout the next two years. As always, the Chamber remains devoted to championing Duluth’s businesses, our economy, and to ensuring decisions align with the best interests of our city and its vibrant economic future."

Opinion: Why Duluth needs the News Tribune

I have long believed that communities are only as strong as their local newspaper. Today, I would expand that thought slightly: communities are only as strong as their commitment to local journalism. The future of the Duluth News Tribune matters because the future of local journalism matters.
