The Duluth Girls Hockey Association is celebrating its 30th anniversary during the 2024-25 season, reflecting on its challenging early history, honoring the community leaders who pioneered all-girls’ hockey in Duluth and celebrating all the players both past and present who have worn the Icebreaker jersey.

For 30 years, the Duluth Icebreakers Girls’ Hockey Association has provided an enjoyable, nurturing, and competitive hockey experience for thousands of girls across the city of Duluth. Not only have they provided a high level of competition and a platform for those girls wanting to play hockey at a higher level, but more importantly, they have fostered an environment for personal development, both on and off the ice, giving girls the skills, knowledge, self-confidence, and appreciation of commitment to be successful in life’s future endeavors outside of the game of hockey.

According to current DGHA President Judd Medak, “Girl’s participation numbers continue to grow both nationally and locally and the Duluth Icebreakers are committed to the continued success of our girls now and for many more years to come. None of this would be possible without our incredible parents, players and community members who have given so much time and energy to our program.”

During this historic season, the association will be sharing stories and pictures from throughout their history. They will also be involved in various celebratory and fundraising events throughout Duluth, and hosting their annual tournament, one of the largest girl’s hockey tournaments in the country. You can pick up some of their commemorative 30th anniversary gear and find more opportunities to gather, celebrate, and promote girl’s hockey in Duluth on their website. – Press release

The quickly-improving Hermantown boys cross country running team will compete in the prestigious 25-team Hibbing Rotary XC Invite today.

"This meet should be a good gauge of where our varsity runners stack up against some of the top teams in the area," said Hawks coach Andy Wilcox. "Nine of the eleven teams from section 7AA will be there so this is an early look at what the section meet may look like."

Wilcox said the Hawks have been hard at work all season and have had the Hibbing Rotary XC Invite circled on the calendar "because they know this meet gives them an idea of what they may need to work on as they get closer to the end of the year and the section meet."

"This course (Hibbing Municipal Golf Course) has always been a good one for us and we have had many of our athletes get their personal best times here in the past," said Wilcox. "I am excited for today for all the runners and it is looking like great weather out there."

Other Hawks activities today:

Girls Tennis – host Superior, 4 p.m.

Girls Swimming & Diving – host Two Harbors, 5 p.m.

Boys Soccer – at Superior, 7 p.m.

Tom Pohlad has continued to express a commitment to winning, but the roster construction has yet to reflect that urgency. The absence of a clear replacement for Pablo Lopez, combined with instability at shortstop and in the bullpen, suggests a team operating below the standard required to contend.

Howie: Castronova signing with UFL the talk of AF1

Castronova’s signing validates the league as a legitimate proving ground. Producing talent that advances to the UFL strengthens AF1’s credibility. At the same time, it underscores the league’s challenge: retaining elite players long enough to build recognizable stars.
