Duluth Police respond to vehicle crash at Myers Wilkens Elementary School

Around 8:25 a.m. today, Duluth Police were called to Myer Wilkens Elementary School at 1027 North 8th Ave East, where a vehicle had collided with the gymnasium.

The initial investigation indicates that the vehicle, with two people inside, failed to stop at a stop sign on North 8th Ave E, crossed the intersection, descended an embankment, and struck the gymnasium's exterior.

Although the gymnasium was significantly damaged, no students or staff were inside during the incident. Mayo Ambulance took both individuals in the vehicle to a local hospital.

The investigation is ongoing, and the School District is assessing the gym's structural integrity, resulting in its closure for an indefinite period. The school has implemented a SECURE protocol but continues regular operations.
