Duluth mayoral candidates Roger Reinert and Emily Larson on Essentia Health's new $900 million Vision Northland hospital and clinic space in Downtown Duluth, which is scheduled to open July 30:
Said Reinert: "This state of the art hospital is an incredible addition to our medical industry, as well as our downtown community. It's on budget, and on time. In addition to providing an amazing facility for Essentia's healthcare workers, it has also provided jobs to our regional construction trades for over two years.
I've had an opportunity to take a sneak peak and am blown away. This facility will set the standard in our region for decades to come. I'm excited for the Vision Northland Open House on Friday, July 21st, and encourage all those interested to attend and take a tour. It's not everyday we see a $900,000,000 investment in Duluth."
Said Larson: "This is a health care investment in our city and region which we deserve: state of the art, beautiful, patient centered and right in our downtown. As a Mayor, it doesn't get much better than this. Having led this legislative effort as the City, it was of paramount importance that the values of our community be prioritized alongside those of the hospital. Thank you to Essentia Health for signing the Project Labor Agreement, meeting Community Benefits Agreement goals and choosing District Energy. While required by my administration to access public funding, inclusive of the $100 million in state bonds, Essentia Health embraced these values and policy applications and stayed the course to see it all through.
It took an enormous village to get to this point. Thank you to Essentia Health, the Benedictine sisters, the State of Minnesota, our Duluth Legislative Delegation, St. Louis County and our outstanding, dedicated City of Duluth staff who met weekly, and often daily, for years with the hospital team, legislators and others to keep all elements of the project moving forward.
This is a community win - I'm proud of, and for, our entire community."
